I have been keen to research my TALBOT and GOGGIN ancestors, especially
those who lived in Ireland, during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837- 1901)

Our Granddaughter, Grace, was born on 19th January 2006. It is dedicated to her as she will, in time, be aware
of her rich Irish heritage. She has an Irish Grandmother: Madge Wilcox, from County Clare and an
Irish Great-Grandma Margaret Talbot from County Kerry. This website is also a way of honouring our
ancestors and preserving their social history for years to come.
I was born in 1955, in Birmingham, England so I have an English accent. However I am very proud
of my Irish roots. I have visited Ireland, especially County Kerry, many times as both my
parents, the late John Joe Talbot and Margaret Goggin were born there. I am old enough (now 57) to
remember, as a child, my Grandfather Michael Talbot (born 1894) and two of his brothers Tomás and William (B.1898) who
were senior citizens when I was much younger. I recall with fondness Mary "Granny" Goggin who fed me
porridge as a child in the late 1950s and even today it is my
favourite breakfast.
My Great-Great Grandfather James Talbot (1821-1910) and his brother Henry (Harry) came to farm at
Lahern (Doon) in 1853. This town land is situated north of Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland and the
land was then passed down through the generations. There is still some land, in the possession of my
family, today, in 2012. James and Elizabeth Talbot nee Breen had 13 children and their descendants are now
scattered, not only all over Ireland, but in Great Britain, Canada, the USA and Australia too.
I want to take great care of what happens to this collated information. After all it
has taken me over 30-years to find it all. I want to preserve it for future generations. Thanks to
Denis Horan, of London, who inspired me to go through the boxes of
information I had collected and build up this website.
May I make a special mention in memory of the late Elizabeth Julia (Betty) O' Carroll
nee Talbot (1916-1999) who came to live in County Kerry with her mother Margaret, in the 1940s. This
was after her father James Talbot died in 1938. She got to know all her Talbot relations, heard the
old stories and searched any available church records to
build up her version of the Talbot family tree. I met her several times in my visits to
Tralee and we later exchanged letters. Her sons James and Joe sent me details James Talbot, their
Grandfather, with his life and his service in the Wexford Division of the Royal Irish Constabulary
for which I am delighted.
The late Bríd Laide nee Talbóid (1922-1999) of Lahern also did a lot of research on the old Talbot
family. I was glad to have a copy of the family tree from her sister Áine.
Joan Capstick of Staffordshire was a great help in sharing information as she too
is a descendant of James Talbot and Elizabeth Breen. Thank you to "Kerry Kate" for her research for
me especially in the "Casey Collections." Also to Niall Tangney, in
Australia, for the details of his branch of the Tangney-Talbot tree.

Flahive, of California, came to Birmingham in March 2005 and so we met up so he could give me
details of his branch of the Flahive family, who is linked to the Talbot family via my Great-
Grandmother Johanna O' Donnell.
Thank you to Jeannie Talbot, who sent me the Canadian Talbot branch where Richard
Talbot, born in 1772 and his wife Anne Oliver, sailed from Tralee in 1832, on the
"Brutus." They settled in Eramosa, Ontario, Canada. The Canadian Talbots were no doubt related as I
saw pictures of their men folk and one looked like my Great Grandfather John Talbot (1854-1939)
I had a lovely letter from Beatty and the late Frank Blennerhassett from Bengworden, Australia who
are related to Boyle Talbot born in 1827. He was the brother James of Lahern. Boyle emigrated from
Kerry in 1857 and his is the oldest Talbot image that I have on this website. Frank was also a First
cousin to Janice Mulcahy.
Thanks to Donald Adolff, of New York, who in 2008, provided me with information on the Mahoney
family whom I am also related too. Thanks Buddy!
In 2009, cousin's Tom, Noel and Catherine Dowling contacted me with their memories of my Grandfather
Michael Talbot at Lahern as they were neighbours and related to Henry (Harry) Talbot.
My sincere thanks to Mary and Mike Talbot of the "Talbot Research Organisation" who have agreed to
publish in their TRO journal "The Talbotania" that this website exists.
In 2011, Joe Maher of Tralee was able to help me with another branch of the old Talbot family from
Richard (1808-1847) and we too are cousins.
Last and not least to Larry Talbot of Wisconsin, USA who shares any information he has discovered
with me. There will of course be other cousins out there around the world who will be related to the
old Talbot family. I will be delighted to hear from you.
In the publication "County Kerry Past and Present" by Jeremiah King, there were
references to the 26 Talbot families, who lived in the County of Kerry in 1901. It has
been suggested, by the late Betty O Carroll, through her research that they may have
all been related.
I have no real evidence that my TALBOT family are related to the Malahide Talbot family and/or the
1st Earl of Shrewsbury. My early ancestors were Protestants, probably because of the Penal Laws but
they later married Catholic woman and the children were baptised in the Catholic faith. In well to
do Protestant families, the cousins intermarried and this seems to be the case with the
Blennerhassett and Talbots. I guess therefore that we are all related to the Talbots who came in to
Britain after 1066, from Normandy. Names like Richard, James, John and Margaret are repeated in
every branch which is confusing at times. Hopefully I have added meaning to these names and am able
to show a snippet of their lives.

The Talbots, a branch of the very ancient and distinguished family of that name, seem to have been
settled in Kerry before 1580, for Capt. Maurice Stack, a feudatory of the Lords Kerry (FitzMaurice,
Lixnaw), and proprietor of Ballyloughrane in 1600, was married to the sister of Walter Talbot.
Stack, having taken service under Sir George Carew, Queen Elizabeth’s Vice-President of Munster, was
made prisoner at Beale Castle in North Kerry, by Honora, Lady Kerry, in her husband’s absence, and
was put to death in 1600 by her retainers. His only child (heiress of Ballyloughran) married Brian
Crosby, nephew of John Crosbie, Bishop of Ardfert, in 1600, and on the 15th of June 1619 she and her
husband and her maternal uncle, Walter Talbot … demised the lands of Ballyloughrant to Samuel
Raymond for ninety-nine years. …
